On a day blessed with brilliant sunshine, Balram Narine once again dominated proceedings when the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) held the Franco Crawford 50th Birthday Race.
The event saw the riders peddling off from the junction of Main and Alexander Streets to the Bush Lot Gas Station on the Corentyne Coast before returning to its place of origin for the finish.
The up and coming Narine, who has been in good form, covered the 45 miles event in a time of 1hr: 50 minutes. Two other youngsters in Donovan Fraser and Ralph Seenarine occupied the second and third spots. Veteran riders Syborne Fernandes and Daniel Mootoo came in fourth and fifth.
The 12-14 Category was won by Jeremiah Joseph who got the better of Marion Washington.
Calvin Persaud won the duel over Daniel Rigby in the event for Over-60 riders. They rode from New Amsterdam to Port Mourant and back.
Narine rode away with six of the eight prime point prizes up for grabs with Seenarine and David Hicks taking one each.
The event pedaled off at 10:45 hrs and saw some 18 riders taking part.
A four man bunch broke away early and held the lead for most of the race as they continued their tussle for dominance. However, Narine seized the opportunity over the last two miles to break away and ride home all alone.
At the presentation ceremony, which was held immediately after at the Raj Sukpaul Gas Station, Crawford, who now resides in England, but is still a member of the FACC restated his earlier commitments of wanting to assist his countrymen as much as possible.
Crawford, who has now established himself as a community activist and is also spreading the word of GOD, does not only assist cycling, but gives to other sports and community activities as well.
Crawford stated that he is motivated to assist his fellow Guyanese because he feels happy to be able to return to Guyana and give back to his home country and community. He remembered his early upbringing when he hadn’t a proper bike and gear to participate. He continues to be impressed by the talent that is available in Guyana.
In addition to the respective winners every cyclist that participated in the race was presented with special prizes compliments of Crawford.
Crawford, Randolph Roberts, executive member Eli Hazel and former National Boxing Champion Jeff Roberts and Proprietor Raj Sookpaul assisted with the presentation ceremony.
Roberts and Hazel also expressed appreciation on behalf of the club. They once again used the opportunity to call on other past members, overseas based Guyanese and businessmen along with the Government to take a page out of Crawford’s book and assist the youths so that they could be kept away from the ills of the society and illicit activities.
