A Kaieteur News front page photograph has helped police capture one of the men suspected of robbing a Diamond Housing Scheme couple last May and accessing their bank accounts through their ATM card.
Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested around 05.00 hrs yesterday at his home at Claybrick Road, Plaisance, East Coast home.
He is likely to be placed on an identification parade shortly.
Persons who know the suspect said that he has been keeping a low profile ever since the robbery. The sources said that he apparently became concerned after learning that a CCTV image of him was published in the Kaieteur News.
Although he was wearing a face mask, persons familiar with the suspect nevertheless recognized him. Some claimed that he was clad in a shirt that he wears regularly.
It was on May 13 that bandits forced open a kitchen window to the Thirteenth Street, Diamond, East Bank home of Gunwattie Sirpaul and Totaram Sadeek.
They gained entry to the house through a kitchen window, kicked down the couple’s bedroom door, held the victims at gunpoint and tied them up.
After being beaten and threatened the couple handed over $300,000, two cell phones, a quantity of jewellery, and a number of household items.
They also took Sirpaul’s bank card and demanded the pin number from her. The robbers reportedly remained in the house for about two hours before loading their booty into the couple’s car and driving off.
The bandits then went to the Vreed-en-Hoop Republic Bank ATM and withdrew money from their victim’s account. This occurred on the same day at around 14:49 hours.
They also went to an ATM in Linden and withdrew more cash.
