Four men who were charged back in 2014, with the murder of Rajendra Singh, a businessman from Foulis, East Coast Demerara, will go on trial for the offence from September 3, says Justice Brassington Reynolds. The State will present a joint murder indictment before Justice Reynolds.
The men, Doenauth Katwaru, also known as ‘Pumpkin’, ‘Doodnauth Katwaroo’ or ‘Doodnauth Ketwaru’; Tony Christopher Thomas, also known as ‘Mataran’, ‘Matteron’, ‘Job’ or ‘Fix Up; Michael Lewis called ‘Michael Joseph’, ‘Jet Lee’, ‘J- Ice’ or ‘Mikey’; and Adony James called ‘Don’, were brought to the High Court in Georgetown, yesterday.
It is alleged that they murdered the businessman between April 5, 2014 and April 9, 2014 during a kidnap.
According to reports, Singh, a spare parts auto dealer was kidnapped by two gunmen on April 5, 2014 at his Foulis, East Coast Demerara business place.
His kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $50M from his family, but they later reduced that amount by half. The ransom was never paid.
Subsequently, Singh’s car was found abandoned in Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara by his wife. Still hopeful that her husband might return home, the wife got news of her husband’s lifeless body being found in an isolated part of Le Repentir Cemetery.
Singh was discovered with his mouth and nose tied with a jersey. His hands were bound
with what appeared to be a belt. He was stuffed in an alcove created by some fallen trees.
Back in court, the four murder accused sat quietly in the prisoners’ dock as they listened attentively to Justice Reynolds who said he was acting based on instructions given by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
A look of disappointment was smeared all over their faces when they were informed of the trial date.
In the meantime, they will remain on remand.
Attorneys-at-law Satyesh Kissoon, Bernard DaSilva, Nigel Hughes and Adrian Thompson are representing the accused respectively. Appearing for the State are prosecutors, Tiffini Lyken, Narissa Leander and Seeta Bishundial.
