Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of a fire that destroyed a building at Lot 7 First Street, Overwinning Village, East Bank Berbice, leaving in its wake millions of dollars in damage.
The two-flat wooden building was razed by the inferno which reportedly began around 00:30hrs Sunday morning.
According to information the building, which was unoccupied was recently renovated, and was well furnished. It had been like that since April after its owner passed away. However it is regularly visited by its caretakers who would open up and clean.
Rawattie Goberdhan, who is one of the late owner’s daughters, resides at No 2 Village East Canje Berbice. She visited the premises on Friday and did her usual chores before locking up and returning home. Everything was intact.
Residents were jolted out of their sleep by the sounds of breaking glass and the brightness in the neighbourhood. Upon checking they were greeted by the huge blaze which had already engulfed most of the upper flat of the building.
Reports are that the owner had left the property for her three adult daughters, one of whom resides overseas. However there seemed to be some disagreement between the daughters and their late mother’s common law husband. The man subsequently moved out of the house.
