Former Member of Parliament (MP), Charles Ramson, saw it necessary to go on record to say, “I am scared of no man.” This was his response to the comments made by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.
Recently, Jagdeo said that Ramson broke party traditions when he announced publicly, his ambition to become People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Presidential candidate for the 2020 General and Regional Elections.
Further, Jagdeo inferred that Ramson has too big an ego for the PPP/C to allow him to run as President. The Opposition Leader said that PPP/C requires “modesty” from its candidate. He said too, that the only “other” person the PPP/C had with a huge ego was Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo.
Yesterday, Ramson said, “I am not going to get into the tit for tat with Jagdeo because this tit for tat politics is destroying Guyana and it must change…I will also not get into this tit for tat with Jagdeo because I respect my political party and all of our members so I will never disrespect any member in public like that since good leadership demands that you protect the people you lead.”
He continued, “But I am responding because I want people to know that I am scared of no man. I only fear God.”
He affirmed that he and Jagdeo are on the same team seeking to obtain the same objective which ultimately is to change the lives of Guyanese for the better. “And, since I believe that the programme of the PPP is better than that of any other political party my objective is to get the PPP back into power.”
Directly addressing the issues of breaking party customs, Ramson said, “I was never aware of any such custom and over my 10 years with the party I saw different. I saw persons make public announcements before going through a nomination process for the 2015 election and only recently one potential contestant made comments in the newspapers.
“But I would like to point out that far worse has happened like persons being involved in corruption and no press conference has ever been held about it or disrespectful and childish comparisons being made.”
Further, Ramson recalled that Jagdeo only recently said that the youth must lead the way.
He then said that if long standing and older politicians are going to invite the youth of Guyana into the political system and “court our support, then you are going to have to be prepared to accept that we are going to be bringing fresh ideas, beliefs and way of doing things too. We respect customs but we also stand firmly for freedom, justice, openness, and fairness.”
Last Thursday, Ramson was quoted that Guyana needs high-quality leadership. “This means leadership that exudes integrity, passion and vision. This would also mean leadership that is technically sound across many key disciplines like oil, economics, business and law… and, leadership which understands the meaning of family and having families of their own.”
The oil and gas consultant said that he thinks he fits the bill of what Guyana needs.
Ramson noted that he has familiarized himself with all arms of the State. Being a lawyer for the last 10 years, he understands the judicial system. As a former Member of Parliament, he understands the legislative arm.
He boasted of working at Office of the President during the reign of former President, Donald Ramotar, so he has a fair understanding of the executive. (See full article here: https://www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/2018/06/28/ramson-signals-desire-to-be-pppc-presidential-candidate/)
The Presidential Candidate of the PPP is elected by the Central Committee consisting of 35 members. Nominations are made, and then each member of the committee votes based on his or her personal preference.
