A soldier who was heading to Berbice with a quantity of narcotics has been jailed.
Collis Beckles, 26, of Lot 70 Barnwell Street Mocha, had identified himself as a soldier when he was nabbed at the newly established police checkpoint at the entrance to the Berbice River Bridge, Palmyra.
Beckles appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of Trafficking.
According to Prosecutor, Corporal Winston Poliah, around 17:30 hrs on January 5, last, the police were conducting a ‘stop and search’ at the police checkpoint at Palmyra on the eastern section of the bridge. Motorcar HC 5799 which had just crossed the bridge, with four occupants inside and heading towards New Amsterdam was stopped and search.
A black and grey haversack was found in the trunk. A search of the bag revealed two bulky plastic bags, which had leaves seeds and stem suspected to be marijuana. An identification card, a green sheet and a pair of Timberland slippers were also found in the bag.
Beckles, who was one of the passengers in the vehicle, had claimed ownership of the bag. He and the other passengers and the vehicle were subsequently taken into custody.
The contents were tested and weighed and found to be 2,137 grams (over four pounds) of marijuana.
He had told investigators that he was given the items by someone to take to Berbice.
He was subsequently charged and placed before the court. He had pleaded not guilty and was placed on $150,000 bail.
He has been found guilty and sentenced to two years in jail and fined $2M. Failing to pay the fine, he will have to serve another year in jail.
