It’s the most prestigious race on the racing calendar and come tomorrow when the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) brings off the Senior leg of its 2018 championships, lots of fireworks can be expected with the best of the nation’s riders set to face off.
Defending champion, Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey is in the pink of condition, he displayed some of what can be expected tomorrow when he successfully defended his Individual Time Trial crown last Saturday on the Linden Soesdyke Highway, clocking 28’ 36″ to win the 12 mile contest which was the longest in the history of the championship.
Jeffrey who rides for Team Foundation on the North American circuit has been doing well and will back himself to cross the line ahead of his peers come tomorrow. But the likes of Jamal John, Paul De Nobrega, Hamza Eastman, Andrew Hicks, Romello Crawford and Curtis Dey are some of the other seniors who will also be ambitious enough and relishing their chances of wearing the championship jersey.
Not to be counted out are junior and masters U-50 champions Briton John and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay who along with the juvenile winner, David Hicks will all be in the mix as will Ajay Gopilall; the GCF rules have allowed their participation.
One thing is sure; the distance will not be easy as the competitors will have to conquer 110 miles which includes hilly terrain but not unfamiliar territory.
The route: Race pedals off from Homestretch Avenue at 07:30hrs outside the National Sports Commission proceed east along Homestretch Avenue, right into Mandela Avenue, left at DSL into the East Bank Carriageway, South along Houston Public Road all the way to Timehri where cyclists will turn around at the end of the double road.
Return to the Linden Soesdyke Junction, make a right onto the Linden Soesdyke Highway and turn around at Mobilissa before returning to the starting line at Homestretch Avenue for the finish, a distance of 110 miles (177.03km).
Jeffrey would also be aiming to achieve what Claire Fraser-Green (Female), Briton John (Junior), David Hicks (Juvenile), Warren Mc Kay (Under-50) and Andy Spencer (Over-50) have done, successfully defended their titles from 2017.
In the case of Fraser-Green who is based in the United Kingdom, this was her sixth (6th) successive championship.
