Take advantage of the ICT Roadshow – Minister Hughes

Public Telecommunications Minister, Catherine Hughes, is calling on Guyanese to take advantage of the opportunities that will be available as the country gears up to host the first edition of the updated Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Roadshow from July 9 to 14.
Minister Hughes, during an interview with the Department of Public Information yesterday, said the ICT Roadshow is an amazing opportunity to promote the use of ICTs in various sectors.
The focus will be placed on ICT in Agriculture, the justice sector, governance, business, youth development and how it can improve the lives of persons with disabilities.
Farmers and other personnel in Agriculture and related fields will be informed about, “exactly what is e-Agriculture, what are the opportunities, what are the challenges, how can farmers start to look at this new way of farming and how can they start to prepare their own private sector businesses,” Minister Hughes said.
Presentations on food safety, extension and advisory services, smart agriculture and the implications of disaster preparedness and awareness are to be made by local and international experts in the fields.
In East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six), a farmers’ outreach will be hosted where the advantages of e-Agriculture will be further explained with practical examples, including the use of a locally developed app that can link farmers to available markets to sell their produce.
An ICT workshop is slated for Annai, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine) at the Bina Hill Institute and the minister is urging citizens to attend the sessions.
She said “it’s a great opportunity for folks in the surrounding areas to come out and to participate. We have sessions that are very specifically tailored to the needs of hinterland communities.”
The highlight of the roadshow will be the Youth Fair on July 13.
Artificial Intelligence, coding, robotics, digital media and big data analytics are some of the hot-button topics to be discussed.
President David Granger will be delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony on July 9 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
