A committment to assist every cricket club in the Ancient County with cricket balls came closer to being fulfilled as another twenty clubs on Saturday last received their balls from the Berbice Cricket Board. The committment was made by newly elected President Hilbert Foster and to date seventy clubs have benefitted from $800,000 worth of balls from the project spearheaded by Foster and his predecessor Anil Beharry. The project was launched on the 29th April, 2018, with a donation of $300,000 worth of red and white balls to twenty two clubs. That donation was spearheaded by the Berbice Cricket Board President, while Beharry has singlehandedly raised over $500,000 from close friends and relatives.
Among the Clubs who received balls from the Berbice Cricket Board last Saturday were Police, Sisters, Betsy Ground, Rose Hall Tigers, Jai Hind, Tain Block Four, Ramnarine Memorial, Belvedere United, Tucber Park, Goed Bananen Land, Big Star, Mount Sinai, Courtland, Flying Star and Sisters. The Berbice Cricket Board expressed gratitude to Beharry, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of New Building Society for his hard work and also for being a true friend of Berbice Cricket. Foster, stated that the ambitious project was launched after he realised that most clubs would struggle to participate in the numerous cricket tournaments that would be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board in 2018 at the different levels. Tournaments would be held at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Female, Intermediate, Second Division, First Division and Internal Zone levels. Foster also disclosed that twenty two clubs also received over $1M worth of cricket gears, stumps and scorebooks while he and Beharry would also be working together to assist promising young cricketers with their own personal cricket gears.
Beharry expressed delight at being able to contribute to the development of Berbice Cricket. The Banking Executive, who served as the Berbice Cricket Board President from 2016 to 2017, stated that cricket is in the blood line of every Berbician and is one of the safest way to keep youths off the road. He stated that all he did was to put up a personal plea to friends via his Facebook Account and the response was overwhelming. He stated that Berbicians including himself had full confidence in the current leadership of the Berbice Cricket Board and was willing to assist in any way possible to return Berbice Cricket to its legendary days. Representatives of the Clubs expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board and Beharry for the assistance. One Representative hailed the massive development that Berbice Cricket has enjoyed over the last four months since the election of the Hilbert Foster led administration.
