While there have been concerns over overtopping and other incidents, which resulted in flooding along the coastland in recent times, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MoPI) has been working to complete a number of river defence projects under its purview for the year.
Speaking to Kaieteur News on the topic, officials attached to the Sea and River Defence Department of the MoPI explained that this year’s agenda includes work on a number of projects along the coastlands, including the sections of river defence at Lenora and Uitvlugt, which was recently affected by heavy tides and overtopping.
The officials explained that the Department is currently engaging the Finance Ministry to acquire additional funding to complete works to areas, which necessitate fortification to prevent flooding along the coastland.
Based on the assessment conducted, the Ministry has determined that among other things, sluice transitions are necessary to fortify the ports.
In March, heavy tides, described as the worst in at least two decades, battered the West Coast Demerara, (WCD) area leaving scores of homes under water and a hospital out of commission.
Waters, which topped the nearby seawall of the Leonora Hospital flowed through the facilities.
Residents along the coastland had raised concerns about the fragility of the country’s sea defences in the face of an increasing number of similar overtopping incidents.
As a result, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) rushed to the area and helped set up two temporary relief centres at the Uitvlugt Community Centre and the Uitvlugt Secondary School.
The centres housed residents affected by the flooding and will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Leonora Hospital has been temporarily closed due to flooding and the Mildred Cox-Younge Health Centre, also known as the Den Amstel Health Centre, is now operating as a temporary hospital.
As a result, the Health Centre facilitated outpatients as well as emergency cases, while the West Demerara Regional Hospital took the more serious cases.
