On Tuesday evening at the Anthony Nesty Sportshal in Paramaribo, Suriname, the Guyanese girls felt the full force of the hammer when Dominican Republic (DR) nailed them by 88 points to register the highest margin of victory in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation’s (CBC) women’s championship so far.
The local girls, slotted in Group B, are using this tournament as a developmental tour and they lost all three of their group games played, with the last a 112-24 loss, surpassing the 108-32 thrashing Cuba unloaded on St. Vincent and the Grenadines during Group A action on Monday.
In the embarrassing loss to one of the tournament’s favourite team, Mariam McKenzie led the scoring for Guyana once again with 13 points. Meanwhile, DR had five players in double digits with Andreina Paniagua scoring a game high 28 points, supported with 18 points from Esmery Martinez.
The semi-finals of the women’s championship saw Cuba against Barbados in the first and Dominican Republic versus Bahamas in the second match at the same Anthony Nesty Sportshal venue last evening with the final set for today.
The Guyanese women were pitted in Group B with Suriname, Barbados and Dominican Republic. While Group A included: Bahamas, Cuba and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
