A police constable attached to the Guyana Police Force, ‘B’ Division Anti-Crime Motorcycle Patrol, was on Monday ambushed by a group of men and stabbed about his body by an identifiable male while on duty.
He was at the time making an arrest at Lad Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Injured and hospitalized is Constable 20060 Randy Claxton, called ‘Capone’, 32, who is stationed at the Central Police Station, New Amsterdam.
Reports are that Claxton and Police Constable 21166 Jodhan were on patrol in the vicinity of Main and Pitt Streets, NA, Berbice when they observed about 10 men in a group smoking what appeared to be marijuana.
Upon noticing the men, they dismounted from their motorcycles but the group on seeing them escaped towards Lad Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Constable Jodhan gave chase on the force’s motorcycle behind the individual while Claxton followed on foot.
The suspect was subsequently caught and Constable Claxton carried out a search on his person. It was during the search that the individual and some identifiable persons surrounded the ranks.
Claxton reportedly gave Constable Jodhan his firearm and then he tried to shove the person away from the suspect.
The victim then observed a another identifiable male handing over a silver knife to one of the men who was identified as ‘Shaquan’.
‘Shaquan’, armed with the knife reportedly approached Constable Jodhan who was securing the prisoner. Claxton told his colleagues that at that point he warned the accused “to put the knife down and back off when Shaquan suddenly rushed me and dealt me a stab to the back of my neck, four to my back, two to my left side of my hip and one to my left forearm”.
The suspect then made good his escape on foot in an eastern direction. The victim was escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated by a doctor on duty and admitted. His condition is listed as stable. The suspect remains at large, said the police investigating the incident.
The Divisional Commander and other ranks visited the constable yesterday afternoon at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Claxton, in April 2016, had his service firearm taken away by one Keno Thompson during a raid in Rose Hall Town. Thompson while resisting arrest struck Claxton in his face with a bottle. The constable’s firearm was taken away during a scuffle that erupted between the two, Thompson then discharged several rounds at Claxton and escaped.
Claxton, fortunately, was however wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.
