A New Amsterdam man who was employed as a watchman by a popular New Amsterdam Imam has been charged with stealing some $8M from the said Imam.
Mahendranauth Narine, 48, of Patrick Dam Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, is accused of breaking and entering the dwelling house of Mohammed Haniff called “Iman Moses” of the Central New Amsterdam Mosque, and stealing $8M in cash.
Narine was placed on $250,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. He posted bail immediately.
The case for the prosecution, as presented by Corporal Winston Poliah, is that on the morning of the 11th of June, last, at Lot 94 Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice, Haniff and his wife left home around 01:00 hrs to go and worship.
The accused was left at home as the watchman.
Upon the couple’s return sometime after, they noticed that the place had been broken into and the inside was ransacked.
When questioned, Narine reportedly told them that he was attacked by some bandits who bound him before breaking into and ransacking the home.
The money, which was collected from members of the Mosque, was missing.
The matter was reported and Narine was arrested and charged. A number of others who were also arrested are still in custody.
Narine is expected to return to court on July 19.
