Jamaica has confirmed that its team to the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors boxing tournament will be submitted to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association by this month end. Head of the Jamaica Boxing Association Stephen `Bomber’ Jones recently dispatched an email to his Guyanese counterpart Steve Ninvalle.
Jones disclosed that the Jamaica boxing fraternity is eagerly looking forward to participating in the tournament and would be submitting its team way before the July 7 deadline given by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association.
“This is a tournament our boxers definitely look forward to. We will certainly be attending,” Jones said in the email received last week. Jamaica and St. Lucia came to Guyana in 2016 for the first edition of the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament and has not missed attending the annual event since.
The tournament is the only of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean and was organized to assist in developing the skills of the regions nursery. Ninvalle applauded Jamaica.
Last week Grenada became the first team to register for the third edition of the annual event which is scheduled to be hosted at the National Gymnasium from August 17-19. The Spice Island has named a team of six inclusive of four boxers, one referee/judge and a coach.
Meanwhile, the association will stage its second in series of preparatory Under-16 competitions on Saturday at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym. The competitions are being held twice a month and are scheduled to conclude on August 4 following which a team will be encamped for the regional tournament.
