Five spent shells that were recovered from the scene of a murder at ‘Warlock’, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, cannot be located, says retired Police Sergeant Eon Jackson.
Those spent shells, components of a firearm, were expected to be tendered yesterday in the trial of Delon Henry, also called ‘Nasty Man, who is accused of the September 29, 2015 murder of Dexter Griffith, formerly of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
Henry, who has retained Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson, is on trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a 12-member mixed jury at the High Court in Georgetown, for the capital offence.
Prosecutors Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt, who are presenting the case for the State, are expected to call 13 witnesses, among them police ranks.
The State is contending that on the day in question, Henry shot and killed Griffith. However, the spent shells are nowhere to be found, and according to former Police Sergeant Eon Jackson, who held the post of Ballistics Analyst at CID Headquarters, he collected the items, which were concealed in an evidence bag, from one Constable Grant, sometime after the murder.
According to Jackson, apart from checking CID Headquarters, he also made checks at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) for the items, but was unable to locate them.
Jackson, who is presently employed at the Guyana Forensic Laboratory, testified to conducting certain examinations on the spent shells.
Earlier on in the trial, Lorraine Griffith, the mother of the deceased, recounted her final moments with her son, whom she said would frequently visit her home to leave his young daughter in her care.
The mother told the court that about 17:30hrs on the tragic day, she was sitting in front of her gate, from where she watched her son play a game of football. The witness recounted that after playing the game, her son took a shower and was preparing to leave her home when someone called out for him. She said that her son walked up the road to ‘Warlock’, an area in East Ruimveldt, where she later met with him to tell him that his daughter was crying.
While there, she recalled that a man known as ‘Gun Butt’, rode up alongside her son and enquired about one ‘Delon.’
Lorraine Griffith added that she heard what appeared to be gunshots, minutes after she walked off from the scene.
She said that she next saw people running away from the scene.
According to the woman, she asked her son’s reputed wife what had happened and she was informed that her son had been shot.
The woman disclosed that she ran to an alleyway. where she saw her son lying in a drain with what appeared to be numerous gunshot wounds. She added that her son was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died.
