A twenty-three-year-old resident of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, who allegedly shot and robbed a wash bay owner, was yesterday remanded to prison by a City Magistrate.
Jermaine Josiah, of Lot 127 CC Eccles Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge alleged that on June 10, at Lombard Street, he discharged a firearm at Leroy Robinson, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.
It was further alleged that Josiah, at the same location, had in his possession a .38 revolver, without being a licenced firearm holder.
He was not required to plead to the two indictable charges after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question, while being in company with another individual and armed with a gun, he robbed Leroy Robinson of $27,000 cash and a cellular phone. Josiah denied this allegation after it was read to him.
According to reports, the alleged victim was comfortably resting inside of his wash bay in the company of his wife when he was suddenly pounced on by Josiah.
Reports also indicated that Josiah relieved the man of his phone and the cash mentioned in the charge, and although there was no resistance, the defendant shot the victim once in his left knee before escaping.
The police were alerted and prompt action by a rank on motorcycle patrol resulted in the apprehension of the suspect.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant. The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor’s submission remanded the defendant.
Josiah was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 6.
