Sticking to its promise of a zero tolerance response to domestic violence, the Guyana Police Force is preparing to throw the book at a lance corporal accused of wife battery.
The rank is scheduled to appear in court today on six charges related to the alleged beating of his spouse and his sister-in-law, whom he allegedly struck with a spade.
Kaieteur News understands that the man is to be charged with wounding; assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; damage to property, two threatening language charges and riotous behaviour in public.
The rank remains under close arrest at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU).
Kaieteur News was told that the assault occurred some days ago at the policeman’s East Coast Demerara home. Sources said that he first assaulted his spouse, then struck his sister-in-law with a spade when she intervened.
The matter was reported at the Turkeyen Police Station. Both women allegedly produced medical reports.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman had filed previous complaints against her husband. He was reportedly always warned, but was never arrested.
The allegations come at a time when the Force has been working to educate its ranks about responding to incidents of domestic violence.
