Three armed bandits were captured after quick action by police and residents of Grove, saw them being cornered in a Supermarket they had broken into. They had earlier tied up the security guard.
Residents of Grove were awakened yesterday morning around, 04:00 hrs, to calls for help from a security guard attached to the “Number One Supermarket”.
The supermarket is located at, 18 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara. The bandits who accessed the premises from the Demerara River, tied up the 53 year old security guard, with shoe laces and bag straps.
They then placed him in a bathroom at the back of the building before proceeding to the top of the three storey building, via the back steps.
As he recalled the incident, the guard said he could hear them breaking glass. He also heard hard clipping sounds like they were cutting the grills.
The security guard said that after a few minutes of silence, he thought the bandits were gone, and he freed himself and went for help. Neighbours called the police, who responded promptly with ranks from Grove Police Station.
Upon inspection of the premises, the police realized that the bandits were still in the building. They called for backup which saw more police patrols coming, and surrounding the business.
After a 45-minute standoff between police and the bandits, the latter surrendered to police, and were handcuffed and shackled.
Police in a statement said, a .38 revolver with six live matching rounds as well as a quantity of phone cards and a sum of cash were found in the suspects’ possession.
Two of the suspects, are said to be from Herstelling Sea Dam whilst the other is from Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, Investigations are continuing and charges are to be laid soon.
