Pandemonium broke out inside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One, which is presided over by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, after an attempted murder accused assaulted police ranks.
The man head butted a court orderly, and exclaimed “I’m fed-up. Y’all kill me and done.”
Twenty-one-year-old Akeem Lammy of 685 Section ‘B’ Block X Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on June 10, last, at Norton Street, Werk-en-rust, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully wounded Johnny Ramdeen.
Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the victim is still in a serious state with a fractured skull at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on June 10, last, the defendant and the victim who are known to each other had an argument.
He added that the defendant became annoyed and armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the victim several lashes about his head.
Lammy was then picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor’s submission remanded the defendant to prison. She also ordered that he be placed under the supervision of a probation officer for counseling until the completion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI).
Moments after Lammy heard he was remanded to prison, the court orderly, who was in the process of removing his handcuffs was viciously assaulted. When the court orderly unlocked one of the handcuffs, the defendant erupted, kicking the police ranks about their bodies.
The Chief Magistrate ordered the court in recess and retired to her chambers.
The entire ordeal lasted for about ten minutes; reporters and police officers were locked inside the courtroom. The defendant was still there shouting ‘I want to die; y’all left me let me die. Me ain’t able go in jail.’
It took approximately five police ranks to stabilize and handcuff the defendant who was behaving in a disorderly manner and crying uncontrollably.
The defendant’s sister, who was also in the courtroom, ran into the prisoner’s dock in an attempt to calm down her brother. But to her surprise, she received a cuff to her face.
The matter was adjourned to June 25, when the defendant will make his next court appearance.
