Cricket Clubs in the Upper Corentyne Sub-Association are singing the praises of the outstanding work of the Hilbert Foster led Berbice Cricket Board after twenty of them on Sunday last received cricket balls. Leaders of the Clubs were loud in stating that Berbice Cricket was on the move again with numerous activities being put into place to ensure that the county returns to the glory days of Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joseph Solomon and Alvin Kallicharran. The Clubs were also presented with five Educational Posters that were recently published by the Berbice Cricket Board, while the two First Division Clubs in the Upper Corentyne area received First Division Caps as well.
The Cricket balls shared out are part of a $1M Balls Project that the current Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster and his predecessor Anil Beharry are spearheading to assist over eight Cricket Clubs in Berbice. Beharry, over the last two weeks has raised $300,000 from personal friends, close associates and to date over $600,000 worth of balls have been shared out to 50 Clubs. Clubs receiving the balls and Educational Posters were Yakusari Horizon, Yakusari Carib, Crabwood Creek Sports Club, Crabwood Creek Bomb Squad, Crabwood Creek All Family, No. 59 Youth Club, No. 73 Young Warriors, No. 72 Cut and Load, No. 70 ‘A’, Spartans, No. 69 Red Rose, No. 68 Turn Team, Scottsburg United, No. 43 Scorpions, Dukestown Warriors, Skeldon Community Centre, No. 71, No. 48 Challengers, No. 69 Vikings and No. 72 All Stars.
Foster hailed the outstanding work of the Dennis De Andrade led Upper Corentyne Cricket Association and stated that the Berbice Cricket Board would continue to invest heavily into the game in the Sub-Association. The donation of the cricket balls were done to enable clubs to participate in the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association Magic Moments 20/20, Ramnaresh Sarwan 40-Overs and Double Wicket Tournaments along with several to be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Second and First Division levels. Representatives of the Clubs were urged to use the donation for the intended purpose, especially the Posters to educate their members on the rich legacy of Berbice Cricket and Rules of the Game. Special thanks were extended to Beharry, for the role he was still playing in Berbice Cricket despite resigning from the Berbice Cricket Board Presidency in early 2017 due to work commitments.
Upper Corentyne Cricket Association Vice President and Chairman of the Competitions Committee, Sydney Jackman expressed gratitude to Foster, Beharry and the Berbice Cricket Board for the assistance. Jackman, in a comprehensive report on the state of cricket in the Sub-Association, stated that 2018 promises to be a remarkable year once the rainy season ceases. The former Guyanese Wicketkeeper stated that the Upper Corentyne Cricket /association was delighted with the current status of Berbice Cricket under the leadership of Hilbert Foster and pledged the Association’s support. The Berbice Cricket Board would provide balls to the remaining Clubs in Berbice before the end of July under the $1M Balls Project.
