The 2018 season of the Bounty Farm sponsored Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) XVs kicked off late yesterday afternoon at the National Park rugby field with Pepsi Hornets versus Panthers. Panthers, who finished second in the recently concluded 2017 XVs season, lost the match against Hornets 12-10.
It was a good start to the season for Hornets who had fallen behind in the 2017 season after finishing fourth on 11 points in the five-team league.
Panthers’ Godfrey Broomes scored two tries and Leon Greaves registered one for Hornets as the winners trailed the first half 10-5. On the resumption of play, Greaves scored another try and his Captain Ryan Gonsalves successfully converted on the muddy National Park surface to put his team in the ascendancy with 12 points.
With Panthers missing one of the key players in Rondell ‘Bull’ McArthur and last week’s hero Jacques Archibald looking a shadow of himself, Hornets held on for the win; despite a disgruntled Lonsdale Brown walking off the pitch.
Hornets gained four points from the win, failing to attain the bonus point which is earned after scoring four or more tries.
During the game, representatives of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team received the 2017 Bounty Farm XVs championship trophy. (Calvin Chapman)
