Guyana went down by 17 points in the first of a three-match warm up series away to Barbados as preparations for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships heighten with the event set to tip off in less than a week in Suriname.
Despite a team-high 19 points and 15 rebounds from Anthony Moe, Guyana went down 76 – 93 to Barbados at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Friday evening.
Barbados were led by captain and point guard Jeremy Gill who finished the night with a game-high 22 points and according to the coach of the team, Junior Hercules, the Bajans outplayed Guyana in every department.
The Bajans led the score in every quarter with the first finishing 23 – 19.
In the second period, Moe had his way with the Barbados defence and along with Adams, kept Guyana in the game after Barbados made a run to close the half with an 11 points lead (44 – 33).
Moe had gotten into foul trouble, including picking up a technical from referee Jennifer Hackett for his continuous outburst, since he felt the whistles were one-sided in favour of the home team.
Hercules confirmed to Kaieteur Sport that he too felt that the officiating was poor as Barbados led the game at the end of the third quarter 69-58.
Stanton Rose, the 18-year-old captain, had a quiet game but Coach Hercules explained to Kaieteur Sport that he believed that his side was nervous in the first game but he expects them to bounce back and some new faces were expected to be in game two’s line up for the Guyana.
Rose, Moe, Adams, Orlan Glasgow (7) and Shaine Webster (13), Travis Burnett (9) tried to bring Guyana back in the game, but things took a turn when Guyana lost their primary scorer (Moe) since he was fouled out.
Adams and Burnett were also fouled out, but at the time, the game was already out of reach. The results of game two which was played last evening will be featured in tomorrow’s edition of Kaieteur Sport.
Both Guyana and Barbados are using the series as preparation for the June 24 – 30 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Men’s Championships.
At the CBC tournament in Suriname, the Guyanese Men are in Group A, with hosts and rivals Suriname, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines, while Group B comprises Barbados, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Haiti and Montserrat.
