Leslain Baird set a new national record of 79 meters en route to earning a silver medal in the Javelin throw event on Thursday at the South American Games being held in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He was tied for second with Argentina’s Braian Toledo with the winner from Colombia, Arley Ibarguen throwing 80m.
Guyana’s medal count remained at five following the penultimate day of the Games with Winston George placing fifth in the men’s 200m final on Thursday after snaring a bronze medal a day earlier in the 400m event.
The national 400m record holder narrowly missed gold in 45.67s, just off the Brazil’s Lucas Carvalho’s winning time of 45.61s and silver medalist, Yilmar Madera (45.64s) of Colombia on Wednesday.
Other medalists for Guyana’s 11 member contingent included hurdler Jenea McCammon along with boxers, Keevin Allicock and Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis who all finished with bronze.
McCammon won her bronze medal in 13.39s in the women’s 100m hurdles. She was led by fellow podium dwellers, Genesis Fernandez (13.08s) of Colombia and Peru’s Diana Alava (13.36s).
Boxers, Allicock (bantamweight) and Lewis (light welterweight) also earned bronze medals for the Golden Arrowhead after losing their respective semi-final bouts.
