Dear Editor
I have chosen your newspaper to bring to light an injustice that is being perpetrated on some contractors by the National Insurance Scheme.
It was good to see this agency stepping up its recovery effort by publishing a list of delinquents in the various newspapers, encouraging companies and individuals to go in and settle their accounts. A few of the featured companies are known to have also been delinquents with the Guyana Revenue Authority since employees would fret about their tax position or their NIS deductions not being paid over despite same being deducted.
What is appalling, though, is a few of these same companies whose names have been published over and over by NIS are still being issued with compliance despite making no effort to settle what they owe which in instances are substantial amounts being owed over a long period of time.
I am therefore calling on the General Manager and those in authority to investigate why delinquents are allowed to carry on their businesses despite being heavily indebted to NIS (people’s old age security money) and they prance around doing business earning money and not making an effort to settle with this agency.
Who facilitates the issuance of compliances to companies that have no regards for their employees or the laws of this land? It is my opinion as a citizen of this country that NIS needs to reshuffle its employees and put stricter measures in place so as to discontinue the lawlessness and start recovering all that’s owed to it and the people of this country.
Thank you
Complainant
