Two Customs enforcement officers were shot last evening during an anti-smuggling exercise on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to reports, the officials were in a coordinated operation to apprehend a gang of smugglers.
The smugglers were reportedly waiting for a pickup of smuggled goods at an East Coast Demerara seashore, around the Strathspey area.
However, the Customs officials, working on intelligence, managed to track the smugglers who were in a car.
The men reportedly used a shotgun to open fire on the vehicle with the Customs officers.
Two of them reportedly received shotgun blasts.
According to reports, police on the East Coast were activated and were searching for the gunmen, up to press time.
Commissioner-General Godfrey Statia, declined to go into details, and would only confirm two of his men were injured.
