“We have to give God praise for what he has done” were the words uttered by the 15-year-old three-time gold medalist, Beyonce Ross, from her bed in Rose Hall Town when she heard the news that her tumor is not cancerous.
This was confirmed by the teen’s mother, Yonette Clarke, during a telephone conversation.
According to Ross’s mother, the biopsy results came back on Monday and showed that the tumor was not malignant (cancerous).
The biopsy was carried out by Dr. Ivan-Crandon who is currently in Guyana from Jamaica. She explained that when the results returned, her daughter was in praise of the Almighty.
However, she noted that a surgery still has to be done to remove the tumor and they are currently looking at hospital options to do so. She also stated that they are now waiting on the relevant Ministry to determine their way forward in getting the surgery done since they are also looking for one that can be done at a reasonable cost.
She added, “We are very happy that the Ministry reached out to us a few days ago.”
Beyonce Ross took ill in February with various symptoms similar to that of a brain tumor. Her worried mother, Yonette Clarke, decided not to wait any longer and rushed her to the nearest hospitals, the Port Mourant and New Amsterdam Hospitals respectively.
There, the girl was treated for stomach aches and ulcers.
As time elapsed, her condition worsened, she then decided to take her daughter to a private doctor in the city. An MRI scan was recommended by the doctor and the results of the test were not what they were expecting.
It revealed that young Ross had a developing tumor in her brain that could possibly be malignant (cancerous).
However, they wouldn’t know until the result of the biopsy, which was done by Dr. Ivan-Crandon, a Jamaica-based Guyanese.
Clarke explained that the MRI scan had revealed that the tumor was situated in the centre of the brain and there was excessive fluid retention.
They were referred to the leading Neurosurgeon in the country, Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi.
The three-time junior gold medalist underwent her first surgery on April 13, 2018 at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Her condition, her mother said, improved a little.
It was then that Ross’ case was referred by Dr. Dhuki to Dr. Crandon who was visiting from Jamaica.
“Dr. Crandon did the biopsy (two) Wednesdays ago, Dr. Dukhi had indicated to us that where the tumor is located, it is in a critical spot in the centre of the brain,” Clarke explained.
Persons desirous of making contact with Ross and her mother and those willing to assist her in any way can do so on telephone numbers 592-337-4456 or 592-683-6106.
