The life of a Whim, Corentyne resident was cut short yesterday when a car driven by a 26-year-old struck him down.
Dead is Doodnauth Sookraj, 44, a cane harvester of Lot 124 Whim Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The driver was identified as Goutam Budhoo of Lot 100 Whim Village. He was at the time driving motor HC 4917.
Kaieteur News understands that approximately 01:30 hrs yesterday Budhoo was driving east along the Whim public road, when he made a left turn and struck Sookraj.
The cyclist was picked up in an unconscious state by Boodhoo and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead up arrival.
His body is presently at the Port Mourant Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. The driver was subsequently taken into custody and tested for breath alcohol content which revealed that his blood alcohol level was 65 and 80 micrograms.
The vehicle and pedal cycle was lodged at the Whim Police Station compound to be examined by licensing and certifying officer.
