A Rose Hall Town man who was charged with murdering his wife back in 2016 following a dispute during a drinking spree, has pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. He is expected to know his fate tomorrow.
The man, Desmond August Gordon, called ‘Tall Man’, 52, a canecutter of Lot 196 Mangru Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, was charged with murdering his reputed wife, Bhagmattie Angad, called “Bhagmattie Etwaroo”, “Kamini”, and “Kamani Etwaroo”,50.
The deceased was a housewife of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice. The killing occurred on May 16, 2016 at their Rose Hall Town home.
Gordon was on trial before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed jury in the Berbice High Court. However the man decided to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
The couple who had been together for about eight years reportedly shared a very abusive relationship. They were imbibing during the day when an argument subsequently erupted.
Loud screams were heard coming from the premises following which the woman was seen running from the house with Gordon in hot pursuit. He had a cutlass which he reportedly inflicted several incise wounds about her body.
The accused was subsequently seen with blood about his body .The police were contacted and arrived on the scene and arrested him.
The case is being prosecuted by attorney at law Tuanna Hardy.
A postmortem examination conducted by Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan showed that death was due to shock and haemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds.
Gordon’s case is being pleaded by Ms. Sasha Roberts of the Legal Aid Clinic.
Following the guilty plea by the accused, an adjournment was sought for a probation report to be presented on the man’s background.
