40 GRADUATE FROM COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING COURSE IN LINDEN
“We want more!” This was the all-around sentiment expressed by the 40 women in Linden who were presented with Certificates of Completion on Wednesday at the Linden Technical Institute.
They have completed Level I Computer Literacy training organized by the Innovation Department of the Ministry of Public Telecommunications.
According to Training Co-ordinator, Donnella Collison, this course is part of the Ministry’s ICT national training schedule based on the Government’s mandate to ensure that our children and entrepreneurs in particular are equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage with counterparts anywhere in the world.
The 12-week Computer Literacy programme got underway on March 6, last, as a pilot project that will be replicated in most other regions of Guyana, tailored to the specific needs of each set of residents.
Course participants in Linden were mostly single mothers and self-employed women. They are now requesting further training in web design, social media management, coding and knowledge of advanced Microsoft Software.
Earlier in May, 14 children, ages 9 to 15 years, completed their Level I Computer Literacy training at the Learning and Resource Centre on D’Urban Street, Georgetown. All of them are resident at the Ruimveldt Children’s Home and Care Centre. One student has already gone on to the 12-week Guyanese Girls Code training programme currently underway.
Four others will continue on to intermediate level training in programmes organized by the Ministry’s Industry and Innovation Unit.
In addition, 20 youths from West Demerara also completed a 12-week literacy programme facilitated by experienced computer technology instructors, Arti and Jaiaram Hirai, at their Vreed-en-Hoop A+ Computer Training Centre. They are to begin the second stage of training in July.
All training programmes are co-ordinated by the Ministry of Public Telecommunications (MOPT) are free of charge.
