Known character Bhojnarine Ramkissoon, called “Duckman”, 33, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice was on Friday sentenced to 18 months in jail after he was found guilty of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Renita Singh in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court. The man who is no stranger to the authorities was nabbed by a police patrol on April 25, last,in the vicinity of the Canje River with two bulky parcels of Marijuana.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Winston Poliah, around 11:30 hrs on the day in question the police, acting on information, proceeded to the area and observed Ramkisson and some other men by the river dam acting in a suspicious manner.
The police proceeded toward the men. Around the same time Duckman’s (Ramkisson) wife called out to him. Upon seeing the cops he threw away something and tried to run away. He was pursued and caught. The other men were also caught; the police retrieved the items.
The men and the items were taken to the Reliance Police Station where the items were tested, weighed and found to be 1,616 grams of Cannabis Sativa. He was charged and subsequently found guilty.
Ramkissoon has been in and out of prison since he was a teen. He has been charged before for break and enter, robbery, larceny, burglary, possession of narcotics, escaping from lawful custody and other misdemeanor.
He was once a part of a gang that created havoc in the Canje area. He was in company with the leader when the man was shot dead. He was wanted by the police who had hunted him down but had escaped the police dragnet.
He subsequently surrendered in company with a lawyer back then, after the police closed in on him.
