With Guyana gearing up to celebrate its 52nd Independence Anniversary on May 26, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) yesterday commenced its pre-independence clean-up campaign in the central business district of Georgetown.
According to the Town Clerk, Royston King, who was at the clean-up site, members of the private sector are in full support of the Council, providing trucks, equipment and other materials to help with the cleaning of the city.
While he noted that he is very disappointed with the support that they are receiving from some of the vendors, he stressed that it is important to have a clean and healthy city, in order to safeguard the integrity of the public’s health and the environment.
The Town Clerk said that persons who are plying their trade around the city “feel as though it is okay to just sell and leave the place without cleaning up afterwards.”
He encouraged all the vendors in the street to “come together and clean up their surroundings.”
“We need to really lift Georgetown to a new level of tidiness and glory of excellence. It’s up to us to decide how we want our city to look,” King told reporters.
Additionally, the Town Clerk said that he had spoken to some of the stall owners who are operating under the Stabroek Market and suggested that they upgrade their stalls.
The Council will be looking to have all the stalls at a standard size and colour.
Meanwhile, King said that there are persons who are using the stalls to commit criminal activities because of how they are situated.
He noted that a few days ago, Council met with the vendors who are operating at the Merriman’s Mall. He said that both the wholesalers and retailers have agreed on a specific time when they would be allowed to sell their items.
“They have come to an agreement that the wholesaler’s vendors will be allowed to sell from 07:00 hrs to 12:30 hrs and then give space for the individuals who have businesses along Robb Street to do some business. The retailers will sell from 17:30 hrs to 07:00 hrs the following day,” King said.
