The Ministry of Social Protection, through the Guyana Women Leadership Institute, recently laid the platform for women empowerment in Region Two, following a two-day workshop on local government for Women. Representative of The Guyana Women Leadership institute, Tricia Watson, said that the institute is geared at empowering women across the various regions in Guyana.
The workshop which was hosted in the Board Room of the Regional Democratic Council last Thursday and Friday, was attended by some 35 women from different designations within the Region. The women were empowered under four key areas; laws of local government, leadership, organizational skills and team building. The aim of the workshop, however, was to provide women wanting to be part of local Government, with the resources and skills needed to be leaders.
The workshop was opened up not just for women who wanted to be part of local government, but also persons who wanted to make a change within their communities.
Ushering in the workshop was Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson who, during her opening speech, urged the women to be bold in taking up the responsibilities of leaders within their respective communities.
“I say to you that if you look within yourself, you would see that you have what it takes to become a leader in your own communities… to represent those who are fearful in coming forward.”
Tricia Watson noted that prior to 2016, few women were knowledgeable about local government elections. She added, however, “because we want women to be part of their community development, we think that we should empower women, we should create the platform for them to be empowered so that they can be a part of local government and community work…. If you don’t know something then you can’t be a part of it.”
As the workshop unfolded, quality information on the affairs of local government was dispensed to the women in attendance. The feedback on the other hand was positive.
