After being repaired some two months ago, the Lady J is still moored at the Charity Wharf, unutilized by the Health Department of Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam].
The vessel, which is owned by the Regional Democratic Council of Region Two, is used primarily to take dental health to residents living in the remote communities in the Pomeroon. Since access to quality dental service is often a challenge in the Pomeroon, the Lady J would aid in taking the service to various communities in both the Upper and Lower Pomeroon.
For the past eight years, however, the dental boat was inoperable due to engine problems. Some time in February, the Regional Chairman Devenand Ramdatt and Arnold Adams, Chairman of the health and sanitation committee, and three other men managed to get the boat engine back in operation. Nevertheless, despite the engine being repaired, the Health Department has failed in making full use of the Lady J Boat.
The Regional Chairman during a recent press conference said, “I was instrumental in getting a contractor to fix Lady J… Our position at RDC is that the dental boat can go out and offer other forms of healthcare services, closest to the residents.”
Ramdatt noted that it is quite unfortunate that the vessel, despite being repaired, was not put back into operation.
“Because the decision was not implemented, we now have the boat still parked in Charity. Residents, on the other hand, are increasingly asking for the service because if they have to come out all the way to Charity to do an extraction or to Suddie, it costs them a lot.”
