One day after a 37-year-old woman was busted at the Camp Street Prison with a quantity of marijuana hidden in two food boxes, she was yesterday charged and remanded to prison.
Nicola Clarke, a poultry farmer of Lot 60 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The allegation against Clarke is that on Tuesday, at Camp Street Prison, she had in her possession 325 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The unrepresented woman denied the allegation after it was read to her by the Magistrate.
The Police Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The prosecutor stated that on the day in question, around13:00 hrs a party of police officers acting on information went to the Camp Street Prison where they met the defendant who was sitting in the waiting area with a white plastic bag.
Inside the plastic bag, there were two food boxes. One of the boxes had cook-up rice while the other contained plain rice.
A further search was carried out on the boxes and two bulky parcels wrapped in brown scotch tape were unearthed underneath the food. Clarke was then arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where she was cautioned. She denied the allegation.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the mother of two was remanded to prison. She was instructed to make her next court appearance on May 30.
It was reported that Clarke was visiting her reputed husband, who is on remand for murder.
