Defending Champions Demerara were routed for the lowest ever total in the over 40-year-old history of U-19 Inter-County three-day cricket when they were dismantled for 40 in round three of the Hand-In-Hand U-19 Inter-County three-day cricket tournament yesterday at Tuschen on the East Bank Essequibo.
One day after setting the new lowest total record after being bowled out for 50 by Berbice at Lusignan, Demerara electing to bat and without Skipper Bhaskar Yadram due to a leg injury, were destroyed for an embarrassing 40 in 20.2 overs.
Extras top scored with 13 after the first ball of the day produced five wides and only Kennard Moonsammy (11) reached double figures in the woeful batting display which saw Windies U-19 player Joshua Persaud, dropped for the previous game for turning up late, being dismissed for a duck.
The tournament’s leading pacer Joshua Jones started the slump and finished with 3-10 to take his tally in the Tournament to 14 scalps.
The multitalented Jones, a National Junior Javelin Athlete, got support from the consistent Joel Fortune (3-13), Quentin Sampson (2-9) for Essequibo, who were dismissed for 143 to claim a 103 first innings lead.
In a tournament that has been plagued by a string of low totals after Demerara’s first round score, Vice-Captain Kurt Lovell (43), Sampson (31) and Jones (21) offered some fight for Essequibo.
Windies U-19 World Cup left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd captured his third five-wicket haul (5-43) to extend his lead among the bowlers to 18 wickets. He was supported by Saadiq Khan (5-42).
Demerara, who amassed 489-8 declared in the first round against the U-17s at Everest, reached 91-5 in 26 overs by the close with Persaud (31) and Adrian Hinds (31) getting starts but not going onto substantial scores.
Sherlon Anthony had 2-21, while Shane Wong, Fortune and Jones have one wicket so far.
Today is the second day and play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs. (Sean Devers)
