After Monday’s tragic accident along the Number 58 Public Road that claimed the life of one and caused two other persons serious injuries, many are of the opinion that if the lorries that were parked along the roadway were not there when the accident occurred it would not have been as fatal.
Dead is Soorojnie Surjraj, of Lot 13 Section A Grant 1305 Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, Berbice. Her daughter Bumika Sukhra is currently at the Skeldon Hospital nursing injuries while mother of the deceased, Raywattie Chanchal who sustained a broken leg and other injuries was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
One of the persons appealing for the vehicles to be removed from along the roadway is the husband of the woman who lost her life in the accident.
He stated that attention should be given to farmers and other persons parking their machinery along the roadways that hinders traffic from flowing smoothly, “everybody using the road in all kinds of manner, they park their vehicles, dry rice, mix cement, throw loads of sand and it has got to stop”.
Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Representative is once again making an appeal to the police to penalize those persons (owners) of the vehicles parked along the roadways for extended periods.
He argued, “I am upset because I have been trying to address this issue for years now and get the relevant Ministries who are responsible for the road shoulders to address this issue as it becomes a norm for farmers on the upper Corentyne to park these agriculture machines for months without not moving them. It is a hazard not only for drivers but pedestrians, unfortunately this lady lost her life.

There is pressure for authorities to act on badly parked vehicles in Berbice following a deadly accident this week.
Harbhajan stressed that the farmers who are found culpable of parking the vehicles on the roadways should face charges and if possible “hefty fines”.
Meanwhile, driver of vehicle HC 2217, Nilindra Premnauth called “Avinash”, 25, remains in police custody. Sources have since divulged, that the owner of the parked lorry, GMM 9207, was detained and questioned for a few hours and released.
The source also stated that persons can be charged for having their vehicles parked along the road for a long period of time.
What was also mentioned was that vehicles parked in a dangerous manner by persons is in breach of the laws. It is questionable why the police, with knowledge of the laws in relation to the parked vehicles have not been stricter in dealing with the offence.
