An unlicensed minibus driver who lost control of his vehicle along Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for causing the death of a passenger, after he collided with a utility pole.
Twenty-four-year-old Ronald Balgobin, of Sophia, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The allegation against Balgobin is that he on April 13 at Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara, drove minibus BWW 4542 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of 52-year-old Yvonne Mohan.
Balgobin denied the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the defendant is an unlicensed driver. The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on May 7.
Balgobin was then escorted from the Chief Magistrate courtroom to Magistrate Renita Singh courtroom to answer to three other charges.
Balgobin was charged for driving a minibus without a licence, breach of insurance and giving false information to the police. He pleaded guilty to the three charges and was fined $75,000.
According to information, on the day in question, Balgobin was proceeding south on East Bank Public Road allegedly at a fast rate when he lost control while negotiating a turn, the minibus then turned turtle and collided with an electrical pole.
Balgobin along with passengers were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where Yvonne Mohan was pronounced dead on arrival. The other passengers were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and were admitted for injuries they sustained.
