Adrian Walters was yesterday sentenced to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman for escaping from the Prashad Nagar police outpost. The 27-year-old resided at 350 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme and was previously charged for breaking and entering.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore, on April 11, last, around 12:50 hrs Walters requested to use the washroom. Upon such request, he was escorted by Police Officer Samaroo.
The prosecutor added that just to the eastern side of the washroom, the backdoor was located and as Walters approached the door, he chucked the police rank and escaped through the backdoor. He then jumped the eastern fence of the police outpost.
In his defence of his guilty plea, Walters claimed that he and the said officer ended up in a scuffle at the washroom door and as such, he chucked him to get away from the lashes he was being dealt. He said one had a firearm.
He also stated that the officers were abusing him at the time of the incident, and the only reason he escaped was to avoid the torture.
An alarm was immediately raised and he was later found in the vicinity of the East La Penitence Police Station. The escapee was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Magistrate.
She gave the sentence on the grounds that the defendant organized the manner in which he would escape and to deter others from attempting the act.
