A Lusignan businessman is currently nursing gunshot wounds at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was shot in the chest by bandits who were posing as customers.
Xavier Owen Khan, a 43-year-old man of Lot 10 Area H, Lusignan Public Road was plying his trade on the Lusignan Public Road, opposite the Discount Store when three men pulled up in a grey car inquiring about the food that the men were selling.
According to Khan’s reputed wife, Anetta Peneux, Khan and her brother, Shundel Dick, were out selling at the food stand last Wednesday when the incident occurred.
Dick said that around 22:30 hours on Wednesday last, three men pulled up in the grey car.
He told Kaieteur News that the two men who were sitting in the back seat of the car exited the vehicle and pretended to order food while the driver sat in the car.
He said that one of the men, after placing a fake order, pulled out a gun and demanded that Khan and Dick hand over their valuables.
Dick said he and Khan told the men that they had “nothing on us.” He said the bandit, after hearing that, fired a shot, which hit Khan in the chest before escaping with nothing.
The police were called and Khan was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
Peneux said that Khan’s large intestine was damaged as a result of the gunshot and had to be repaired. She said her husband spent a few days in the intensive care unit at the Hospital.
Khan, a father of two, recently returned to Guyana and started a food business in his community. He lived in the US for over 11 years and served in the US Marine.
The bandits are still on the run and the matter is being investigated.
