The department of Culture, Youth and Sport will be hosting its second youth innovative project during the months of April and June, 2018.
The Ministry acknowledged the innovative mind and pioneering spirit of the youth of Guyana hence, the Youth Innovation Project of Guyana in collaboration with the Ministry of the Presidency, Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport the initiative was officially launched in 2017.
This project is intended to grant monetary award to innovative solutions that propose to address local issues and challenges. The project is said to test the creativity of youths who can convince a panel of judges that their ideas can solve community issues using STEAM and creating a green economy.
Last year, participants submitted 56 proposals. This year it is hoped that there are more innovative ideas from the hinterland. As such, organizers have raised the grant to $70 M, compared to the $50 M from last year.
Guyanese between the ages 14 and 35, in and out of school are invited to participate. Teams of no more than ten persons are eligible. The proposed solutions are to be guided by their application to the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics disciplines. Successful proposals will be aligned within the tenets of a green economy and thus will later be implemented.
In 2017, a total of 21 groups and individuals were awarded grants to develop their innovation solutions. Currently most of the projects are in their implementation stage while others are securing relevant materials to begin work.
