At least four dozen sugar workers are nursing minor injuries about their bodies after the lorry in which they were travelling, toppled at Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, sometime around 5:30 am yesterday.
When this publication visited the Fort Wellington Hospital, most of the injured persons had already been treated for minor injuries and sent away, but several others remained for additional treatment. A large gathering of relatives was seen in the institution’s compound.
The lorry is said to be attached to the Blairmont Sugar Estate.
According to one of the injured, Ishwar Persaud, who was at the back of the lorry when the accident took place, the driver made a sudden dash that resulted in the vehicle toppling.
“When da happen, the truck start roll and it fall over, some people get hard knock.”
He stated that they were heading to Bath Settlement.
Meanwhile, driver of the estate lorry, Waheed Kaodabus, 37, told relatives that his brakes failed when he was about to stop for another worker at Cotton Tree Village.
He said that he was heading west when the truck skidded off the road and subsequently toppled.
He confirmed that there were 55 workers in the lorry at the time of the accident.
No serious injuries were recorded.
