A 12-member mixed jury yesterday found Trevon Giles guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl.
Giles, who was on trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the High Court in Georgetown was indicted on two counts of Rape of a Child Under 16. The first count alleged that on January 14, 2016 in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under 16. The second count alleged that on January 17, 2016 in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under 16.
Yesterday, after almost two hours of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict as it related to the first count. In relation to the second count, Giles was acquitted after all 12 members of the jury found him not guilty.
Sentencing for Giles, was however deferred until April 26, after his Attorney, Clyde Forde, requested a probation report. In the circumstances, the convicted rapist was remanded until that time.
The case for the State was presented by Prosecutors Abigail Gibbs and Tiffini Lyken.
