Skipper Bhaskar Yadram struck an unbeaten double century to put Demerara in a strong position against the Select U-17team when the Guyana Cricket Board Hand-in-Hand Inter County U-19 three-day tournament commenced yesterday.
Yadram hardly put a foot wrong except for a let off by wicket-keeper Yudister Persaud after he had already past his first century and struck 27 fours and 15 sixes to finish on 259 leading Demerara to 446-8 after they had decided to bat at Everest Cricket Club.
Openers Robin Williams and Adrian Hinds added 47 for the opening stand before Williams was caught and bowled by Nigel Deodat for 20. Sagar Hethiramani was then trapped lbw to Seon Glasgow for 15 before Hinds and Yadram frustrated their opponents with a third wicket stand of 98 in sweltering heat. Hinds started off watchfully but blossomed nicely, timing the ball well on both sides of the pitch; he hit 10 fours and one six before he was caught at cover off-leg spinner Niron Bissu for 94.
Bissu then removed Steffan Wilson (02), Nkosie Beaton (01) and Kennard Moonsammy (05) before Yadram added 90 with Dwayne Dick. Dick struck three fours but after looking well set he played across to Deodat and was bowled for 30, while Ashmead Nedd was lbw to pacer Gevon Schultz for five.
However, Yadram was brutal as he wasted little time is dispatching anything too full or short. Yadram took a liking for Schultz bowling hitting him for three consecutive fours and he used his feet nicely to the spinners, who with the exception of Bissu were guilty of bowling too flat on a pitch tailor-made for batting. Qumar Torrington was not out on five as Bissu who also represents Guyana in table tennis, finished with 4-69 while Deodat had 2-90, Glasgow 1-24 and Schultz 1-76.
Play continues at 10:00hrs today.
