The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health on Saturday hosted a grand World Health Day Fair and Exhibition.
It was held at D’Urban Park in light of PAHO/WHO’S 70th anniversary, under the theme “Universal Health: Everyone, Everywhere”.
Among the partners joining with PAHO/WHO in hosting the celebration were the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department, the Environmental Health Unit of Region Ten, Health Departments of each of the regions in the country, Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association and members from UNFPA.
The fair kicked off with a grand walk hosted by Region Four, followed by a 45-minute Zumba session on the D’Urban Park square. Aerobics were also done, after which the fair and exhibition was officially launched.
It saw exhibits from the different regional health centres as well as local private health institutions. There were models on the construction of farms presented by the health centre in Region Five, demonstration on how to use condoms and talks on reproductive health by the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association amongst others.
The theme originated from the need to ensure that all people and communities readily have access to health care without any discrimination and without financial struggles according to PAHO. World Health Day is observed on April 7 of each year since it was founded in 1948.
They noted that this covers the range of health services, including health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, rehabilitation of all the health services which should be of sufficient quality, comprehensive, safe, effective, and affordable for all.
They also stated that universal health is not just about ensuring everyone is covered, but that everyone has access to care when they need it, wherever they are.
In addition to which, health for the 21st century universally requires the involvement of all sectors of society in order to combat poverty, social injustice, educational gaps, and poor living conditions, among other factors that influence people’s health.
Region Four Health Officer stated that the motive of this year’s exhibition was to celebrate World Health Day.
“The WHO was established 70 years ago to be the Custodian of the health of every single citizen of the world and today is a day for all chief stakeholders involved in health care to basically revitalize the commitment of ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to health,” he said.
He also noted that the officers of Region Four are focusing on how they can incorporate technology into making health services more readily available and efficient while improving the health quality, hence, focusing on how they could harness the power of technology and data to make evidence based decisions that can really transform into tangible improvement in the health of those at Region Four.
The fair was part of the many activities held by PAHO/WHO for its 2018 road to universal health.
It attracted many citizens across the country that showed keen interest in information given and received free health care such as screening for hypertension, diabetes and health talks from nurses and persons within the health sector.
