The Preliminary Inquiry into the murder of Corentyne, Berbice businessman, Patrick Mohabir, 42, of Lot 9 Belvedere Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice continued on Friday in the Reliance Magistrate Court.
Standing before Magistrate Mauricia Mittleholzer is accused Kelvin Seegobin called “Kelly”, 38, of Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne Berbice.
Seegobin, who is well known to the authorities, is a neighbour of the businessman. He is being represented by Sasha Roberts of the Legal Aid clinic. He was also positively identified in an Identification parade.
He is accused of, on the night of January 6, 2016, being one of two masked men, armed with a ‘long gun’ and a cutlass, and dressed in dark long-sleeved clothing, entered the home of the businessman.
Mohabir was shot to death. He operated the popular grocery store, Shabina and Sons, on the premises.
At the time Mohabir, his wife, Shabina Ahmad, and four of his children were at home. The man was shot during a confrontation with the two masked bandits.
The woman had stated that during the confrontation she had begged the bandits not to harm the family and even offered them money.
The man was shot in the left thigh during a scuffle with one of the intruders.
The bandits reportedly then returned to the wounded businessman’s wife, who allegedly managed to “scramble” the mask off of one of the intruders. The intruders then fled, taking two cell phones and a pair of shoes.
Mohabir was rushed to hospital where he succumbed. The woman had stated that the men did not appear to be robbers.
There were no signs of forced entry to the house.
The Prosecution which is being led by Inspector Althea Solomon concluded its case with the testimonies of former Detective Superintendent Terrence Paul and Detective Inspector Dexter Torrington. Superintendent Paul who was in charge of crime in “B” Division at the time detailed the part he played during the investigation. After receiving certain information and conducting surveillance he gave certain instructions which led to the arrest of Seegobin. Testifying earlier were Detective Sergeants Lawrence Thomas and Sergeant Curtis Cort, Detective Corporal Juke Jacque, Constable Emanuel Davidson among others.
The defence is expected to make its submission for the magistrate to consider. Both the prosecution and defence are then expected to make their submissions before the magistrate makes a ruling.
