The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has teamed up with Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company once again to host their annual Inter-County U-19 three-day and 50-over tournaments set to commence on Tuesday.
The tournament, which involves Essequibo, GCB Select U-17 XI, Berbice and defending champions Demerara, was launched yesterday at Hand-in-Hand office at Avenue of the Republic.
Both parties view this tournament, which is being used as a yardstick to select Guyana U-19 team for the regional competition, as vital for the development of the game. The Cricket West Indies U-19 tournament will be held in Barbados later this year. Last year Guyana won both the three-day and 50-over tournaments and these achievements are a direct reflection of the developmental structures that are in place for the growth of the game here.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hand-in-Hand Director and Fire Manager, Howard Cox said they are happy to be associated with the tournament once again and wished the teams well. He added that Guyana has been doing well in the past four years at the U-19 and senior levels and they have seen a number of players being elevated to the senior West Indies team.
Secretary of the GCB, Anand Sanasie said he is delighted at the venture once again which is viewed as a vital part of cricket development in Guyana. He said that the tournament will also help to prepare the players shortlisted to represent Guyana at the Regional U-17 tournament which will be held in July in Trinidad and Tobago. Sanasie noted that five players, Ronaldo Alimohamed, Bhaskar Yadram, Ashmead Nedd, Joshua Persaud and Raymond Perez were selected for the West Indies U19 side in the recent U-19 World Cup which is a testimony to Guyana’s dominance of regional cricket at this level. The senior team also won the Regional four-day franchise tournament for the past four years. Sanasie expressed gratitude to Hand-in-Hand for their support, adding that their contribution has given the GCB a great opportunity to provide the U-19 players with an ideal preparation ground.
In the first round of the three-day, the Select U-17 will play Demerara at Everest, while Essequibo will take on Berbice at Lusignan. The second round will commence on April 14 with Demerara playing Berbice at Bourda and the Select U-17 facing Essequibo at Everest. In the third round on April 18 Essequibo will battle Demerara at Tuschen and Berbice will take on the Select U-17 at Bourda.
