Three men appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday, and were charged for having in their possession, on March 29 last, five pounds of cocaine, which the court heard was concealed in a yellow Shell gas cylinder.
Two of the accused, Mohammed Kadir, 38, of 16 Goedverwagting, West Bank Demerara and Mark Gomes, 33, of Campbellville, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge, while 33-year-old Ryan Fowler of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, pleaded guilty.
According to the prosecution, on the day in question, the men were in their vehicles, in the vicinity of Sheriff and John Streets, Campbellville, around 19:45 hrs, and had no knowledge that they were being monitored.
Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford told the court that the three men, on March 29 last, were attempting to traffic 2.250 kilograms of cocaine, when officers of the CANU observed the occupants of the two vehicles in a trade-off.
It was reported that on the day of the exchange, Fowler came out of his vehicle with the gas cylinder and took it to another vehicle. This was when ranks from the CANU intervened and began to search the vehicles. The drug was subsequently unearthed and tested on spot, and the three men were escorted to the Police Headquarters.
Fowler told the court that he was going to make a statement at the time and admit that the drugs found were his, but he was told not to by one of the police officers. The description of the police officer is unknown.
As a result of his guilty plea, Fowler was sentenced to 4 years in prison and fined $6 million dollars.
The prosecutor objected to the other two men being granted bail due to the fact that there was enough evidence that led to them being involved in trafficking the illicit narcotic. Kadir and Gomes were remanded to prison and will appear in court again on April 17.
