Pele Alumini Corporation Director Denis Carrington, Coordinator of the Second Annual Youth Education Development Programme has declared that the programme, which started yesterday and concludes today, got off to a great start yesterday at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue with some 58 youths between the ages of 10-16 participating.
Following the morning session which saw presentations by Dr. Colin Watson on Dental Hygiene, David Gomes of the Toast Masters (Public Speaking) and Ms. Donna Chapman of the Bertram Collins College of Public Service on Career Guidance, the participants were taken on a tour of the Parliament Buildings.
Carrington stated that the Pele Alumini Corporation, made up of past Pele players living in the USA are focused on giving back to the land of their birth and more importantly, “Assisting our youth in developing and solidifying their education while they are playing sports.”
He lamented that they do not have to be playing football alone but part of the group include table tennis players as well.
The organisation over the past seven (7) years would have been investing in numerous age group competitions every Easter but has since shifted their focus to conducting educational programmes and has now partnered with the Guyana Football Federation which has signed a 5-year contract to run off the Pele Alumini Frank Watson Under-15 Inter Association League being played in the federation’s nine (9) Member Associations.
Today’s sessions which commences at 08:00hrs will cater for interactive sessions on Conflict Resolution, Benefit of Sports, Preparing for the Future, Goal Setting for a Positive Life, Etiquette, Basic Table Manners/Use of Cutlery/Crockery Practice and Information Technology-Today’s Needs.
The Alumini also partners the Ministry of Education on a yearly basis to run off an Essay Competition which sees participation from eight of the nine Districts. Some of the top students are then drafted into the Pele Alumini Scholarship Programme.
Five such children are presently part of the programme and they receive a monthly stipend towards their educational pursuits.
Other Directors are Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton who is the Treasurer of the Alumini with Keith Michael Layne aka ‘Bumpy’ serving as Secretary.
