Everest Masters defeated Enterprise Busta Sports Club Masters by six wickets to claim the Rockaway Group of Companies trophy when the teams collided on Saturday last at the Everest Cricket Club.
Enterprise Masters batted first and managed 151-9 off their allocation of 25 overs. Openers Vishwanauth Gobin and Kalie Mohamed handed them a fine start with a stand of 58 before Gobin was removed by off-spinner Rajesh Singh for 39 after hitting four fours and two sixes.
Singh then trapped Rohan Mangal lbw for three before Mohamed who hit five fours was caught off Rohan Sarjoo for 34, leaving the score at 84-3.
Off-spinner Saheed Mohamed then removed Lakhram Samaroo for 14 before Sarjoo accounted for Devanand Persaud for two; however, Lakeram Dindyal and Vishal Persaud gave the innings much needed impetus in the latter stages with some courageous batting. Dindyal slammed two fours and one six in an unbeaten 19, while Persaud made 14. Rakesh Gangaram claimed 2-16, Sarjoo 2-21, Singh 2-34 and Mohamed 1-21.
Mohamed and Sahadeo Hardaiow got Everest reply off to a flier as they added 37 in three overs. Mohamed hit Dindyal for two towering sixes in the second over before he was caught off Seemangal Yadram for 25 off 16 balls. Hardaiow was then removed by Devanand Persaud for 19 with three fours before Hemraj Garbarran and Shivnarine Chanderpaul added 34 for the third wicket stand to keep Everest Masters in the hunt.
Garbarran took boundaries off leg spinner Chanderpaul Singh as he raced to 33 with five fours before he was taken off Persaud after facing 24 balls. Ramesh Narine was then removed by Singh for three before Chanderpaul and Surendra Hiralall took their team home a stand of 42. Chanderpaul milked the bowling nicely picking up singles with nudges and pushes on both sides of the pitch before he smashed Singh over mid-wicket for an effortless six and finished the game with a sweetly timed four though long-on to remain unbeaten on 36 which came off 47 balls. Hiralall made 16 not out as Everest Masters finished on 155-4 in 23.3 overs. Persaud claimed 2-34, while Yadram and Singh had one each.
Mohamed was named man-of-the-match by adjudicator Kaieteur News Sports journalist, cricket umpire and Coach Zaheer Mohamed.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Chief Executive Officer of Rockaway Group of Companies of New York, Hafeez Ali congratulated both teams for an excellent display and said he will continue to support the game locally.
