Children across Berbice were yesterday sent home smiling after they received kites, compliments of the Head-of-State David Granger, and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo at their separate initiatives.
The President made his first stop at Republic Square, Corriverton, where hundreds of children from all races and backgrounds turned up to collect their kites.
The kites were embellished with pictures of him and the children seemed excited as they were handed the kites by the Head-of-State himself.
He followed with a stop at the Rose Hall Town Primary for some more distributions. He ended the day at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
Meanwhile, Jagdeo made his first stop at Gangaram, East Canje, then visited Betsy Ground, Adelphi, Canefield and Cumberland villages, where he also distributed kites to the boys and girls. He concluded the kite sharing activity in Corriverton.
At Corriverton, President Granger said that Easter is a national event that is celebrated by all religions. “It doesn’t matter if you are Hindu, Muslim or Christian”.
He added that in Guyana persons celebrate each other’s festival, “Today is the day for all Guyanese; that is why we are here, for all Guyanese Children”.
The Opposition leader also stated at his kite flying exercise at Canje that he has been visiting several parts of the country distributing kites to children. “I do this because I think a lot of people at Easter, in spite of the difficulties they have, particularly in the communities that I have gone to; Canje, for example where the sugar belt that is in depression, they still want to be part of the celebration”.
He added that it is not an occasion for politics but rather an occasion to celebrate a festival that cuts across race and religion.
Both leaders at their respective exercises promoted unity and boasted of the togetherness the Easter celebration brings, this message resonated well with Berbicians.
